Google is linking out of the AI answer again

Google is putting more links inside its AI answers. The page a buyer opens has to say what you sell, and how to start.

If you sell from a website, read this before you order another batch of pages.

On 15 October 2026 Google said links inside AI Mode and AI Overviews are showing up more often, and higher, while the person is still reading. Hema Budaraju, who leads product for Search, wrote that on Google's blog. Search Engine Land reported it the same day.

Google is also trying a box at the top of some answers. The box is for the one or two official pages where a task can actually be finished, and it is meant to say why the link is useful. Google called it a test. It is not on for every search.

A searcher can also pick sites they want to see more of. Google calls those Preferred Sources, and says the number of people using them has grown by more than seven times since the start of 2026. That figure is Google's. The same post says the carousels already used for timely articles in AI search will roll out to more places and more languages, and that those carousels can highlight a Preferred Source.

A link in an answer needs a page to land on. The first screen should say what you sell, who it is for, and how to start. If that only exists in a PDF, a deck, or a chat, there is nothing of yours for the answer to open. A homepage that tries to be every service at once has the same problem. The person clicked because one sentence matched one job. The page should continue that sentence.

Write the page the way a buyer uses it.

A company website is the page that names the pages, the price, and who owns the code. You see that plan, and you agree it, before we start. After handover we fix faults in the agreed work for at least 3 months. New features sit outside that cover. Someone can open the site on a phone and on a computer. We do not promise a load time for every country, and we do not promise that Google will link to you.

Search work is a separate line, on the pages you already have. It is titles, descriptions, and pages that match what you sell, so a person and an answer have something specific to open. We usually need read access to Search Console, and access to the site. Do not send passwords in the form. We do not promise a rank, and we do not promise a date when Google will recrawl.

Website care is for the site after it is live, including a site we did not build, after we have looked at the code and the host. The plan names the checks and the price. If a link in an answer starts sending people to a form that is broken, or a certificate that has lapsed, the click is wasted. Messages on WhatsApp or email are answered Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00 Western Indonesia Time.

The same test applies if the thing you sell is not a page.

A mobile app needs a page that says what the app does before anyone talks about the store. The written plan can name iPhone, Android, or both, and a camera, a location check, or a notification if the job needs them. It does not include a fingerprint reader unless you asked for one. Store submission is in the plan only when the plan says so. Apple and Google still decide whether the listing is accepted.

A desktop app needs a page that names the desk job: the printer, the scanner, or the scale, if those are part of the work. We do not buy the hardware. Kasir Kita, the ready-made cashier, is a product you can try in the browser. A desktop app built around your own rules is a different job.

AppSheet is for a checklist or a stock count that already lives in a spreadsheet. Anton Maulana leads that work. He holds Google's advanced AppSheet certificate on Coursera. The plan still names what the app does, and the price, before we start. Data can stay in Google Sheets, Excel, Cloud SQL, or PostgreSQL. Offline use is in the plan only when the plan says so.

None of those pages earn a link because the prose sounds current. They earn a click, if they earn one, because a person can finish the next step on them. Google's own test is aimed at pages where a task can be completed. A page that only repeats the question does not pass that test, whether or not an AI answer is in the picture.

Do this before you brief a redesign. Open the search you wish you ranked for, in an ordinary window, and see whether an AI answer is there. If it links out, open the link that is not yours and write down the first sentence. Then open your own matching page. If a stranger cannot tell what you sell, who it is for, and how to start, the missing piece is that page. More articles will not patch it.

Tell us what the site must do. We reply by the next business day. You agree the written plan, and the price in it, before we start.
